Reel Hungry Trailer: Oldboy 2013 Red Band Trailer

Check out the new red band trailer for the US remake of Oldboy after the jump!

Summary: "An advertising executive is kidnapped and held hostage for 20 years in solitary confinement. When he is inexplicably released, he embarks on an obsessive mission to discover who orchestrated his punishment, only to find he is still trapped in a web of conspiracy and torment."

The original Oldboy movie was a Korean film adaptation of a manga directed by the surreal stylist Park Chan-wook and starring Choi Min-sik. Oldboy is one of my favourite films of all time and remains one of my go to films for introducing foreign cinema to the unenlightened. So I was seriously worried when I heard Hollywood had their eyes set on remaking Oldboy. First off Josh Brolin is fantastic choice to play the lead in this remake and as for the director Spike Lee I felt they could have done a lot better if they tried. Elizabeth Olsen will co-starring along side Brolin, Sharlto Copley who I assume is the mystery man in the trailer adds his nerd cred to the film and Samuel L. Jackson rounds off the cast with some extra star power. I also notice that there some subtle difference to the Korean version in the trailer, most likely to set it apart from the original and give people who already seen it something different. All in all it looks better than initially expected but I don't expect it to gain the cult classic status it's Korean counter-part has.

If you haven't seen the original Oldboy I highly suggest you check it out right away! Be WARNED its not a film for the faint of heart!

Now I'm not against remakes of foreign films but they usually aren't as great as the original counter-parts. The reason is that most of the US remakes feel like quick cash grabs by  Hollywood studios execs who think "Wow that cult hit foreign film did really well lets just remake that with no respect for the source material". I hope that isn't the case with this Oldboy remake and if anything get more people interested to watch the original.
