Ji's Four Most Anticipated Films of 2013

Living in an age where people slurp down pot noodles in front of the telly, the inevitable question “What films are you looking forward to this year?” drifts into conversation at one point or another and after the winter warm up, Wreck it Ralph, Die Hard 5, Django, etc we’ve all set our sights to the summer blockbusters and year end climaxes.

Now where does my choice of film lie when it comes to picking out what I want to watch? Honestly, it’s tough to say, so I’ll just tell you my top 3 films from last year and maybe that will give you an insight into what I chose this year.

The Raid: Redemption (Indonesian) – Trailer
Skyfall – Trailer
The Intouchables (French) – Trailer

Ok no Avengers, Dark Knight Rises and what not but it’s mainly because we know they’re good and I hate being mainstream :P
Especially when in my opinion The Raid is still my favourite film of last year! You actually feel emotionally invested to what happens to the main character and the pacing is brilliant! So without listing the obvious choices, my top 4 films to look out for this year.

Johnnie To’s Drug War
Release Date: 18th April 2013 (Hong Kong)
Cast: Louis Koo, Sun Honglei, Crystal Huang, Wallace Chung

What’s it about?
From all the tag lines when you google this, revolves around “OH MY GLOB it’s totally been shot and set in mainland China” (the Jinshan district) and its Johnnie To’s first mainland film. People seem to forget that most of us don’t give a rats behind about that and especially me and I’m Chinese!

So that nonsense aside this film looks the business, think Infernal Affairs but this time no willing undercover agent, this guys been caught between a crack rock and a hard place and I for one will want to know how this story unfolds.

Check out the trailer below:

Kickass 2
Release Date: 16th August 2013
Cast: Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Chloë Grace Moretz, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Jim Carrey

What’s it about?
After the jumping onto the scene back in 2010, Kickass gave us everything we wanted about a film about an amateur playing super hero.

So what can we expect in this sequel? Well from what I can tell, Kickass 2 will show us what nut jobs he’s inspired and what happens when his arch enemy, Muthaf###er (was known as the Red Mist), finds out who he is and wants revenge.

Enjoy the trailer and this comic book snippet from ifanboy.com I think this give you an idea of what to expect ;)

Anchorman 2
Release Date: 20 December 2013
Cast: Will Ferrell, Christina Applegate, Paul Rudd, David Koechner, Steve Carell, Fred Willard

What’s it about?
The original was released back in 2004 and just when all hope for a sequel was lost BLAM! Sex Panther… 60% of the time, it works all the time.

Harrison Ford will be joining the cast and early projections have been slim on what his role will be but he can put on one grumpy smug persona, so perfect for an amazing adversary to Ron Burgundy's News team and after the success of the first film, there was always an outcry for a sequel, I mean that’s just gona be easy money!

What can we expect? Great cameos like the News team stand-off scene, sexist level jokes and general goofing around.

Epic – (Animated Film)
Release Date: May 24, 2013
Cast: Amanda Seyfried, Josh Hutcherson, Christoph Waltz, Steven Tyler, Aziz Ansari, Pitbull, Jason Sudeikis, with Beyoncé Knowles and Colin Farrell

What’s it about?
Ok so it’s based on William Joyce's children book The Leaf Men and the Brave Good Bugs, now I’ve not read the book so I can only go from what I’ve seen in the trailer and looking at it from my HD screen…. This looks stunning.

The story revolves around the classic script of good VS evil in a secret world filled with talking bugs and tiny people. A teenage girl somehow gets transported into their surreal world and must survive her captors ongoing war while figuring out how to return to hers.

And that's it from me, I hope showed you ragamuffins what's out there instead of what the media has been pumping out and of course some notable mentions: Olympus Has Fallen, Saving General Yang, Knights of Badassdom.
